śrutaḥ kena krameṇa syādityata idamucyate . cetanapūrvikā ca sṛṣṭirityevamarthe ca puruṣaḥ ṣoḍaśakalaḥ pṛṣṭo yo bhāradvājena, sa īkṣāñcakre īkṣaṇaṁ darśanaṁ cakre kṛtavānityarthaḥ . sṛṣṭiphalakramādiviṣayaṁ kathamityucyate kasmin kartṛviśeṣe dehādutkrānto bhaviṣyāmyahameva vā kasminvā śarīre pratiṣṭhite’haṁ pratiṣṭhāsyāmi pratiṣṭhitaḥ syāmityarthaḥ . sa prāṇamasṛjata prāṇācchraddhāṁ khaṁvāyurjyotirāpaḥ pṛthivīndriyam . mano’nnamannādvīryaṁ tapo mantrāḥ karmalokā lokeṣu ca nāma ca upani° . nanvātmā’kartā, pradhānaṁ kartṛ, ataḥ puruṣāthe prayojanamurarīkṛtya pradhānaṁ pravartate mahadādyākāreṇa, tatredamanupapannaṁ puruṣasya svātantryeṇekṣāpūrvakaṁ kartṛtvavacanaṁ satvādiguṇasāmye pradhāne pramāṇopapanne sṛṣṭikartari sati īśvarecchānuvartiṣu paramāṇuṣu satsvātmano’pyekatvena kartṛtve sādhanābhāvādātmana ātmanyanarthakartṛtvānupapatteśca . na hi cetanāvān buddhipūrvakāryātmano’narthaṁ kuryāt, tasmātpuruṣārthena prayojanenekṣāpūrvakamiva niyatakrameṇa pravartamāne’cetane pradhāne cetanavadupacāro’yaṁ–sa īkṣāñcakre ityādiḥ . yathā rājñaḥ sarvārthakāriṇi bhṛtye rājeti iti cet? nātmano bhoktṛtvavatkartṛtvopapatteḥ . yathā sāṅkhyasya cinmātrasyāpariṇāmino’pyātmano bhoktṛtvaṁ tadvadvedavādinābhīkṣādipūrvakaṁ jagatkartṛtvamupapannaṁ śrutiprāmāṇyāt . tattvāntarapariṇāmādātmano’nityatvāśuddhatvānekatvanimittacinmātrasv arūpavikriyātaḥ puruṣasyātmanyeva bhoktṛtve cinmātrasvarūpavikriyā na doṣāya . bhavatāṁ ṣunarvedavādināṁ sṛṣṭikartṛtve tattvāntarapariṇāma evetyātmano’nityatvādisarvadoṣaprasaṅga iti cenna, ekasyāpyātmano’vidyāviṣayanāmarūpopādhyanupādhikṛtaviśeṣābhyupaga mādavidyākṛtanāmarūpopādhikṛto hi viśeṣo’bhyupagamyate ātmanobandhamokṣādiśāstrakṛtasaṁvyavahārādyuparamārthaṁ paramārthatī’nupādhikṛtañca tattvamekamevādvitīyamupādeyaṁ sarvatārkikabuddhyanavagāhyamabhaya śivamiṣyate na tatra kartṛtvaṁ bhoktṛtvaṁ vā kriyākārakaphalañca syādadvaitatvātsarvabhāvānām . sāṅkhyāstvavidyādhyāropitameva puruṣe kartṛtvaṁ kriyākārakaṁ phalañceti kalpayitvā”gamabāhyatvātpunastatastrasyantaḥ paramārthata eva bhoktṛtvaṁ puruṣasyecchanti tattvāntarañca pradhānaṁ puruṣāt paramārthavastubhūtameva kalpayanto’nyatārkikanirākṛtabaddhiviṣayāḥ santo vihanyante . tathetare tārkikāḥ sāṅkhyairityevaṁ parasparaviruddhārthakalpanāt āmiṣāthina iva prāṇino’nyonyaṁ virudhyamānā arthadarśitvāt paramārthatattvāddūramevāpakṛṣyante’tastanmatamanādṛtya vedāntārthatattvamekatvadarśanaṁ pratyādaravanto mumukṣavaḥ syuriti tārkikamate doṣadarśanaṁ kiñciducyate ‘smābhiḥ na tu tārkikatātparyeṇa tathaitat atroktam . vivadan khe’vanikṣipya virodhodbhavakāraṇam . taiḥ saṁrakṣitasadbuddhiḥ sukhaṁ nirvāti vedadit . kiñca– bhoktṛtvakartṛtvayorvikriyayorviśeṣānupapattiḥ . kā nāmāsau kartṛtvājjātyantarabhūtā bhoktṛtvaviśiṣṭā vikriyā yato bhoktaiva puruṣaḥ kalpyate na kartā . pradhānantu kartreva na bhoktriti nanūktaṁ puruṣaścinmātra eva svātmastho vikriyate bhuñjāno’nantāntarapariṇāmena . pradhānantu tattvāntarapariṇāmena vikriyate’to’nekamaśuddhamacetanañcetyādidharmavattadviparītaḥ puruṣaḥ . nā’sau viśeṣo vāḍmātratvātprāgbhogotpatteḥ . kevalacinmātrasya puruṣasya bhoktṛtvaṁ nāma viśeṣo bhogotpattikāle cejjāyate nivṛtte ca bhoge puniṣastadvādaśebhetaścinmātra eva bhavatīti cenmahadādyākāreṇa ca pariṇamya pradhānaṁ tato’petya punaḥ pradhānaṁ kharūpeṇāvatiṣṭhata iti asyāṁ kalpanāyāṁ na kaścidviśeṣa iti vāṅmātreṇa pradhānapuruṣayorviśiṣṭavikriyā kalpyate . atha bhogakāle’pi cinmātra eva prāgvatpuruṣa iti cet? na tarhi paramārthato bhogaḥ puruṣasya . bhogakāle cinmātrasya vikriyā paramārthaiva, tena bhogaḥ puruṣasyeti cenna pradhānasyāpi bhogakāle’vikriyatvādbhoktṛtvaprasaṅgaḥ . cinmātrasyaiva vikriyābhoktṛtvamiti cedauṣṇyādasādhāraṇadharmavatāmagnyādonāmabhoktṛtve hetvanupapattiḥ . pradhānapuruṣayoryugapadbhoktṛtvamiti cenna pradhānasya pārārthyānupapatteḥ . na hi bhoktrordvayoritaretaraguṇapradhānabhāva upapadyate prakāśayorivetaretaraprakāśane . bhogadharmavati satvāṅgini cetasi puruṣasya caitanyaprativimbādayo’vikriyasya puruṣasya bhoktṛtvamiti cenna puruṣasya kasyāpanayanārthaṁ mokṣasā dhanaṁ śāstraṁ praṇīyate’vidyādhyāropitānarthāpanayanāya śāstrapraṇayanamiti cet? paramārthataḥ puruṣo bhoktaiva na kartā pradhānaṁ kartreva na bhoktṛ paramarthasadvastvantaraṁ puruṣāccetīyaṁ kalpanā”gamabāhyā vyarthā nirhetukā ca iti nādartavyā mumukṣubhiḥ . ekatve’pi śāstrapraṇayanādyānarthakyamiti cenna abhāvāt . na hi śāstrapraṇetrādiṣu tatphalārthiṣu ca śāstrasya praṇayanamanarthakaṁ sārthakañceti kalpanā syāt . na hyātmaikatve śāstrapraṇetrādayastato’bhinnāḥ santi tadabhāve evaṁvikalpanaivānupapannāḥ . abhyupagate ātmaikatve pramāṇārthaścābhyupagato bhavatā yadātmaikatvamabhyupagacchatā . tadabhyupagame ca kalpanānupapattimāha śāstram . yatra tvasya sarvamātmaivābhūttatkena kaṁ paśyet? ityādiśāstrapraṇayanādyupapattiñcāha . anyatra paramārthavastusvarūpādavidyāviṣaye yatra hi dvaitamiva bhavatītyādi . vistarato vājasaneyake . vibhakte vidyā’vidye parāpare ityādāveva śāstrasyāto na tārkikavādabhaṭapraveśaḥ vedāntarājapramāṇabāhugupte ihārtmakatvaviṣaya iti . etenāvidyākṛtanāmarūpādyupādhikṛtānekaśaktisādhanakṛtabhedavattvādb rahmaṇaḥ sṛṣṭyādikartṛtve sādhanādyabhāvo doṣaḥ pratyukto veditavyaḥ parairukta ātmānarthakartṛtvādidoṣaśca . yastu dṛṣṭānto rājñaḥ sarvārthakāriṇi kartṛtvādyupacārādrājā karteti so’trānupapannaḥ . sa īkṣāñcakra iti śrutermukhyārthabādhanātpramāṇabhūtāyāḥ tatra hi gauṇī kalpanā . śabdasya, yatra mukhyārtho na sambhavati . iha tvacetanasya muktabaddhapuruṣaviśeṣāpekṣayā kartṛkarmadeśakālanimittāpekṣayā ca bandhamokṣādiphalārthā niyatā puruṣaṁ prati pravṛttirnopapadyate . yathoktasarvajñeśvarakartṛtvapakṣe tūpapannā, īśvareṇaiva sarvādhikārī prāṇaḥ puruṣeṇa sṛjyate . kathaṁ? sa puruṣa uktaprakāreṇekṣitvā prāṇaṁ 1 hiraṇyagarbhākhyaṁ sarvaprāṇikaraṇādhāramantarātmānamasṛjata sṛṣṭavān, atraḥ prāṇāt śraddhāṁ 2 sarvaprāṇināṁ śubhakarmapravṛttihetubhūtām . tataḥ karmaphalopabhogasādhanādhiṣṭhānāni kāraṇabhūtāni mahābhūtānyasṛjata . khaṁ 3 śabdaguṇaṁ vāyuṁ 4 svena sparśena kāraṇaguṇena ca viśiṣṭaṁ dviguṇam . tathā jyotiḥ 5 svena rūpeṇa pūrvābhyāñca śabdasparśābhyām viśiṣṭaṁ triguṇaṁ tathā”po 6 rasena guṇenāsādhāraṇena pūrvaguṇānupraveśena caturguṇāḥ . tathā gandhena pūrbaguṇānupraveśena pañcaguṇā pṛthivī 7 . tathā taireva bhūtairārabdhamindriyaṁ 8 dviprakāraṁ buddhyarthaṁ karmārthañca daśasaṅkhyam . tasya ceśvaramantaḥsthaṁ saṁśayasaṅkalpādilakṣaṇaṁ manaḥ 9 . evaṁ prāṇināṁ kāryaṁ karaṇañca sṛṣṭvā tatsthityarthaṁ vrīhiyavādilakṣaṇamannam 10 . tataścānnādadyamānādvīryaṁ 11 sāmarthyaṁ balaṁ sarvakarmapravṛttisādhanam . tadvīryavatāñca prāṇināṁ tapaḥ 12 viśuddhisādhanaṁ saṅkīryamāṇānāṁ, mantrā 13 stapoviśuddhāntarvahiḥkaraṇebhyaḥ karmasādhanametā ṛgyajuḥsāmātharvāṅgirasaḥ . tataḥ karma 14 agnihotrādilakṣaṇam . tato lokāḥ 15 karmaṇāṁ phalam . teṣu ca sṛṣṭānāṁ prāṇināṁ nāma 16 ca devadatto yajñadattaityādi . evametāḥ kalāḥ prāṇināmavidyādidoṣavījāpekṣayā sṛṣṭāstaimirikadṛṣṭisṛṣṭā iva dvicandramaśakamakṣikādyāḥ svapnadṛksṛṣṭā iva ca sarve padārthāḥ punastasminneva puruṣe pralīyante hitvā nāmarūpādivibhāgam bhā° . sa yathemā nadyaḥ syandamānāḥ samudrāyaṇāḥ samudraṁ prāpyāstaṁ gacchanti, bhidyete tāsāṁ nāmarūpe samudra ityevaṁ procyate . evamevāsya paridraṣṭurimāḥ ṣoḍaśa kalāḥ puruṣāyaṇāḥ puruṣaṁ prāpyāstaṁ gacchanti, bhidyete tāsāṁ nāmarūpe puruṣa ityevaṁ procyate, sa eṣo’kalo’mṛto bhavati, tadeṣa ślokaḥ kathaṁ sa dṛṣṭāntaḥ? yathā loke imā nadyaḥ syandamānāḥ sravantyaḥ samudrāyaṇāḥ samudro’yanaṁ gatirātmabhāvo yāsāṁ tāḥ samudrāyaṇāḥ samudraṁ prāpyopagamyāstaṁ nāmarūpatiraskāraṁ gacchanti . tāsāñcāstaṁ gatānāṁ bhidyete vinaśyete nāmarūpe gaṅgāyamunetyādilakṣaṇe . tadbhede samudra ityevaṁ procyate tadvastūdakalakṣaṇameva, yathā’yaṁ dṛṣṭāntaḥ . uktalakṣaṇasya prakṛtasya puruṣasyaparidraṣṭuḥ pari samantāddraṣṭurdarśanasya kartuḥ svarūpabhūtasya . yathārkaḥ svātmaprakāśasya kartā tadvad, imā ṣoḍaśa kalāḥ prāṇādyāḥ uktāḥ kalāḥ puruṣāyaṇā nadīnāmiva samudraḥ puruṣo’yanamātmabhāvagamanaṁ yāsāṁ kalānāṁ tāḥ puruṣāyaṇāḥ puruṣaṁ prāpya puruṣātmabhāvamupagamya tathaivāstaṁ gacchanti . bhidyete tāsāṁ nāmarūpe kalānāṁ prāṇādyākhyā rūpañca . yathāsvabhede ca nāmarūpayoryadanaṣṭaṁ tattvaṁ puruṣa ityeva procyate brahmavidbhiḥ . ya evaṁ vidvān guruṇā pradarśitakalapralayamārgaḥ sa eṣa vidyayā pravilāpitāsvavidyākāmakarmajanitāsu prāṇādikalāsvakalo’vidyākṛtakalānimitto hi mṛtyustadapagame’kalatvādevāmṛto bhavati . tadetasminnarthe eṣa ślokaḥ bhā° . arā iva rathanābhau kalā yasmin pratiṣṭhitāḥ . taṁ vedyaṁ puruṣaṁ veda yathā bhā vo mṛtyuḥ parivyatha upa° . arā rathacakraparikarā iva rathanābhau rathacakrasya nābhau yathā praveśitāstadāśrayā bhavanti yathā tathetyarthaḥ . kalāḥ prāṇādyā yasmin puruṣe pratiṣṭhitā utpattisthitilayakāleṣu taṁ puruṣaṁ kalānāmātmabhūtaṁ vedyaṁ vedanīyaṁ pūrṇatvāt puruṣaṁ puri śayanādvā veda jānīyāt . yathā he śiṣyā vo yuṣmānmṛtyurmā parivyathā mā parivyathayatu . vyathāmāpannā duḥkhina eva yūyaṁ stha atastanmā bhūd yuṣmākamityabhiprāyaḥ bhā° . tathā ca prāṇaḥ 1 śraddhā 2 vyoma 3 vāyuḥ 4 tejaḥ 5 jalaṁ 6 pṛthivī 7 indriyaṁ 8 manaḥ 9 annam 10 vīryam 11 tapaḥ 12 mantrāḥ 13 karma 14 lokaḥ 15 . nāma 16 ityetā prāṇādināmāntāḥ ṣoḍaśa kalāḥ puruṣasya upādhaya iti sthitam . gatāḥ kalāḥ pañcadaśa pratiṣṭhām śrutiḥ 3 aṁśamātre ca prācī dik kalā dakṣiṇā dik kalodīcīdikkalaiṣa saumya! catuṣkalaḥ pādo brahmaṇaḥ prakāśavānnāma sa ya etamevaṁ vidvāṁścatuṣakalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇaḥ prakāśavānityupāste prakāśavānasmiṁlloke bhavati prakāśavato ha lokāñjayati ya eta mevaṁvidvāṁścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇaḥ prakāśavānityupāste pṛthivī kalā’ntarikṣaṁ kalā dyauḥ kalā samudraḥ kalaiṣa vai saumya! catuṣkalaḥ pādobrahmaṇo’nantavānnāma . sa ya etamevaṁvidvāṁścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇo’nantavānityupāste’nantavānasmiṁlloke bhavatyanantavato ha lokāñjayati ya etamevaṁvidvāṁścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇo’nantavānityupāste . agniḥ kalā sūryaḥ kalā candraḥ kalā vidyutkalaiṣa vai saumya! catuṣkalaḥ pādo brahmaṇo jyotiṣmānnāma sa ya etamevaṁvidvāṁścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇojyotiṣmānityupāste jyotiṣmānasmilloṁke bhavati jyotiṣmato ha lokāñjayati ya etamevaṁvidvāṁścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇo jyotiṣmānityupāste . prāṇaḥ kalā cakṣuḥ kalā śrotraṁ kalā manaḥ kalaiṣa vai saumya! catuṣkalaḥ pādobrahmaṇa āyatanavānnāma sa ya etameva vidvāṁ ścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇa āyatanavānityupāste āyatanavānasmilloṁke bhavatyāyatanavato lokāñjayati ya etamevaṁvidvāṁścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇa āyatanavānityupāste . avatāraśabde bhūri udāharaṇam dṛśyam . paladvayātmake 4 kālāṁśabhede sa ca si° śi° darśitoyathāyo’kṣṇornimeṣasya kharāma 30 bhāgaḥ sa tatparastacchatabhāga uktā . truṭirnimeṣairdhṛtibhi 18 śca kāṣṭhā tattriṁśatā sadgaṇakaiḥ kaloktā . triṁ śatkalā”rkṣī ghaṭikā kṣaṇaḥ syānnāḍīdvayaṁ taiḥ khaguṇai 30 rdinaṁ ca . gurvakṣaraiḥ khendumitai 10 rasustaiḥ ṣaḍibhaḥ palaṁ tairghaṭikā khaṣaḍbhiḥ 60 . syādvā ghaṭīṣaṣṭirahakharāmai 30 rmāso dinaistairdvikubhi 12 śca varṣam . kṣetre samādyena samā vibhāgāḥ syuścakrarāśyaṁśakalāviliptāḥ śi° . yo’kṣṇorlocanayoḥ pakṣmapātaḥ sa nimeṣaḥ . sa yāvatā kālena niṣpadyate tāvān kālo’pi nimeṣaśabdenocyate upacārāt . tasya triṁśadvibhāgastatparasaṁjñaḥ tatparasya śatāṁśastruṭiriti . atha ca nimeṣairaṣṭādaśabhiḥ kāṣṭhā . kvacicchāstrāntare tithibhiriti pāṭhaḥ . kāṣṭhātriṁśatā kaloktā . kalānāṁ triṁśatā ghaṭikā . sācākṣīṁ gurvakṣarasyoccāryamāṇasya yāvān kālastaddaśakenaiko’suḥ prāṇaḥ . praśastendriyapuruṣasya śvāsocchvāsāntarvartī kālaityarthaḥ . ṣaḍbhiḥ prāṇairekaṁ pānīyapalam . palānāṁ ṣaṣṭyā dhaṭī . ghaṭīnāṁ ṣaṣṭyā dinam . triṁśaddinairekomāsaḥ . māsairdvādaśabhirvarṣamiti kālasya vibhāgo darśitaḥ prami° . ahno’stamayavelāyāṁ kalāmātrā’pi yā tithiḥ kālamā° vyāsaḥ . pratipalleśamātreṇa kalāmātreṇa cāṣṭamī paṭhanti . sa ca trīṇi trīṇi kalāsahasrāṇi pañcadaśa ca kalā ekaikasmin dhātāvavatiṣṭhate iti suśru° . aṣṭādaśa sahasrāṇi saṁkhyā cāsmin samuccaye . kalānāṁ navatiḥ proktā suśru° . vikalānāṁ kalā madhyāhnānnatastasya natasaṁ jñā . atha careṇa madhyāhnānnatayutasyonnatakālasya kila jyā sādhyā sā ca jyāmadhyāvadhirbhavati . sa ca madhyapradeśo’horātravṛttasyonmaṇḍalasaṁpāte bhavati . yata atropapattiḥ . atra carajyākujye trijyādyujyāpariṇate . atastābhyāṁ cānupātaḥ . yadi carajyayā kujyā labhyate tadā sūtreṇa kimiti . phalaṁ kalā . sā kalā’horātravṛtte jyā . sā palavaśādakṣakarṇavat
