kalā [kal-kac] A small part of anything; U. 1. 1; a bit, jot;

kalāmapyakṛtapārelaṁbaḥ K. 304; sarve te mitragātrasya kalāṁ nārhaṁti

ṣoḍaśīṁ Pt. 2. 55; Ms. 2. 86, 8. 36.

(2) A digit of the moon (these are sixteen); jagati jayinaste te bhāvā

naveṁdukalādayaḥ Māl. 1. 36; Ku. 5. 71; Me. 89.

(3) Interest on capital (consideration paid for the use of money);

ghanavīthivīthimavatīrṇavato nidhiraṁbhasāmupacayāya kalāḥ Śi. 9. 32

(where kalā means ‘digits’ also).

(4) A division of time variously computed; one minute, 48 seconds, or

8 seconds.

(5) The 60th part of one thirtieth part of a zodiacal sign, a minute of a

(6) Any practical art (mechanical or fine); there are 64 such arts, as

music, dancing &c.

candramaṇḍalasya ṣoḍaśe bhāge yathā ca candrasya ṣoḍaśabhāgasya

kalāśabdavācyatvam . tathā kālamā° uktaṁ yathā skāndeamā

ṣoḍaśabhāgena devi! proktā mahākalā . saṁsthitā paramā māyā dehināṁ

dehadhāriṇī . amādipaurṇamāsyantā yā eva śaśinaḥ kalāḥ . tithayastāḥ

samākhyātāḥ ṣoḍaśaiva varānane! iti ayamarthaḥ yā mahāmāyā

ādhāraśaktirūpā dehināṁ dehadhāriṇī saṁsthitā sā candramaṇḍalasya

ṣoḍaśabhāgena parimitā candradehadhāriṇyamānāmnī mahākaleti proktā

yeyamametyuktā kṣayodayavivarjitā dhruvā ṣoḍaśī kalā tadyuktaḥ

kālastithisāmānyaṁ yāstvavaśiṣṭāḥ vṛddhikṣayopetāḥ pañcadaśa

kalāstābhirviśiṣṭāḥ kālavibhāgāstithiviśeṣāḥ . tāsāṁ

pañcadaśānāmekaikāṁ kalāṁ bahnyādayaḥ prajāpatyantāḥ pañcadaśa

kalāpānaṁ somotpattau paṭhitam, tathā hi prathamāṁ pibate

vahnirdvitīyāṁ pibate raviḥ . viśvedevāstṛtīyāntu caturthīṁ salilādhipaḥ .

pañcamīṁ tu vaṣaṭkāraḥ ṣaṣṭhī pibati vāsavaḥ . saptamāmṛṣayodivyā

aṣṭamīmaja ekapāt . navamīṁ kṛṣṇapakṣe ‘sya yamaḥ prāśnāti vai kalām

. daśamīṁ pibate vāyuḥ pibatyekādaśīmumā . dvādaśīṁ pitaraḥ sarve

spaṣṭamuktam śata° brā° 14, 4, 3, 22 . yathā prajāpatiḥ

ṣoḍaśakalastasya rātraya eva pañcadaśakalā dhruvaivāsya ṣoḍaśī kalā sa

rātribhirevā ca pūryate ‘pa ca kṣīyate so’māvāsyāṁ rātrimetayā ṣoḍaśyā

kalayā sarvamidaṁ prāṇabhṛdanupraviśya tataḥ prātarjāyate tasmādetāṁ

rātriṁ prāṇabhṛtaḥ prāṇaṁ na vicchindyādapi kṛkalāsasya

yo’yamannātmā prajāpatiḥ prakṛtaḥ sa eṣa saṁvatsarātmanā viśeṣato

nirdiśyate rātrayaḥ ahorātrāṇi tithaya eva pratipadādyāḥ dhruvaiva

nityaiva vyavasthitā . etāsāṁ vittatvaṁ vaktuṁ tatsādharmyamāha sa

kalātmā prajāpatiramāvāsyāṁ rātriṁ rātrau yā dhruvā kalātrāvasthitoktā

etayā ṣoḍaśyā kalayā sarvamidaṁ prāṇijātaṁ

sthāvarajaṅgamātmakamanupraviśya yadapaḥ pibati yaccoṣadhīraśnāti

tat sarvamevauṣadhyātmanā vyāpyāmāvāsyāṁ rātrimavasthāya

candrakalānāṁ nāmabhedādikamanupadaṁ vakṣyate . sarvābhiḥ sarvadā

candrastaṁ kalābhirniṣevate jyotsnāntarāṇīva kalāntarāṇi . kalā ca sā

kāntimatī kalā(va)bhṛtaḥ kumā° . kalāsamagreṇa gṛhānamuñcatā

kalādadhānaḥ sakalāḥ svabhābhirudbhāsayan saudhasitābhirāśāḥ

nidhirambhasāmupacayāya kalāḥ iti ca bhāghaḥ kalādharaḥ kalābhṛt

prabhavantīti paśropaniṣat . tasmai sa hovāca . ihaivāntaḥ śarīre

hṛdayapuṇḍarīkākāśamadhye he saumya! sa puruṣo na deśāntare vijñeyo

yasmin etā ucyamānāḥ ṣoḍaśa kalāḥ prāṇādyāḥ prabhavantyutpadyanta

iti ṣoḍaśakalābhirupādhirūpābhiḥ sakala iva niṣkalaḥ puruṣo

lakṣyate’vidyayeti bhāṣyam . puruṣasya ṣoḍaśakalatvaṁ na

sākṣātsāvayavatvena, kintu kalājanakatvena tadupādhimattvāditi

vaktuṁyasminnetā iti vākyatātparyamāha ṣoḍaśakalābhiriti ānanda0

yathā ca puruṣasya voḍaśakakṣatvaṁ tathoktaṁ tatraiva

praśnopaniṣadi śaṅkarācāryakṛtatadbhāṣye ca yathāsa īkṣāñcakre

kasminnahamutkrānta utkrānto bhaviṣyāmi kasmin vā pratiṣṭhite

pratiṣṭhāsyāmīti upa° . tadupādhikalādhyāropāpanayanena vidyayā sa

puruṣaḥ kevalo darśayitavya iti kalānāṁ tatprabhavatvamucyate .

prāṇādīnāmatyantanirviśeṣe hyadvaye śuddhe tattve

śakyate’dhyāropamantareṇa pratipādyapratipādanādivyavahāraḥ kartumiti

kalānāṁ prabhavasthityapyayā āropyante

avidyāviṣayāścaitanyāvyatirekeṇaiva hi kalā jāyamānāstiṣṭhantyaḥ

pralīyamānāśca sarvadā lakṣyante . ata eva bhrāntāḥ

kecidagnisaṁyogādghṛtamiva ghaṭādyākāreṇa caitanyameva pratikṣaṇaṁ

jāyate naśyatīti tannirodhe śūnyamiva sarvamiti . apare ghaṭādiviṣayaṁ

caitanyaṁ cetayiturnityasyātmano’nityaṁ jāyate vinaśyatīti . apare

caitanyaṁbhūtadharma iti laukāyatikāḥ .

anapāyopajananadharmakacaitanyamātmaiva

nāmarūpādyupādhidharmaiḥ pratyavabhāsate . satyaṁ jñānamānandaṁ

brahma vijñānaghana evetyādi śrutibhyaḥ . svarūpāvyabhicārāt yathā

yathā yo yaḥ padārtho vijñāyate tathā tathā jñāyamānatvādeva tasya

tasya caitanyasyāvyabhicāritvaṁ vastu ca bhavati kiñcinna jñāyata iti

cānupapannam . rūpañca dṛśyate na cāsti cakṣuriti vat . vyabhicarati tu

jñānaṁ, jñeyaṁ na vyabhicarati kadācidapi . jñeyābhāve’pi

jñeyāntarebhāvājjñānasya . na hi jñāne’sati jñeyaṁ nāma bhavati

kasyacitsuṣupte’darśanāt jñānasyāpi

suṣupte’bhāvājjñeyājjñānasvarūpasya vyabhicāra iti cenna .

jñeyāvabhāsakasya jñānasyālokavajjñeyābhivyañjakatvāt

svavyaṅgyābhāve ālokābhāvānupapattivat suṣupne

vijñānābhāvānupapatteḥ . na hyandhakāre cakṣuṣo rūpānupalabdhau

cakṣuṣo’bhāvaḥ śakyaḥ kalpayitumavaināśikena . vaināśiko jñeyābhāve

jñānābhāvaṁ kalpayatyeveti cet? yena tadabhāvaṁ kalpayettasyābhāvaḥ

kena kalpyata iti vaktavyam vaināśikena . tadabhāvasyāpi

jñeyatvājjñānābhāve jñānābhāva iti cet? na, abhāvasyāpi

jñeyatvābhyupagamādabhāvo’pi jñeyo’bhyupagamyate vaināśikaiḥ,

nityañca tadavyatiriktañcejjñānaṁ nityaṁ kalpitaṁ syāttadabhāvasya ca

jñānātmakatvādabhāvatvaṁ vāṅmātrameva na

paramārthato’bhāvatvamanityatvaṁ ca jñānasya . na ca nityasya

jñānasyābhāvonāmamātrādhyārope kinnaśchinnam . athābhāvo jñeyo’pi

san jñānavadatirikta iti cenna tarhi jñeyābhāve jñānābhāvaḥ jñeyaṁ

jñānavyatiriktaṁ na tu jñānaṁ jñeyavyatiriktamiti cenna .

jñeyajñānayorekatvañcedabhyupagamyate–jñeyaṁ jñānavyatiriktaṁ na

jñeyavyatiriktaṁ jñānam jñeyavyatiriktaṁ neti tu śabdamātrameva

tadvahniragnivyatirikto’gnirna vahnivyatirikta iti yadvadabhyupagamya

jñeyavyatireke tu jñānasya jñeyābhāve jñānābhāvānupapattiḥ siddhā .

jñeyābhāve’darśanādabhāvo jñānasyeti cenna suṣpterityabhyupagamāt .

vaināśikairabhyupagamyate hi suṣupte’pi vijñānāstitvaṁ, tatrāpi

jñeyasattvamabhyupagamyate jñānasya svenaiveti cenna bhedasya

siddhatvāt . siddhaṁ hyabhāvajñeyaviṣayasya

jñānasyābhāvajñeyavyatirekājjñeyajñānayoranyatvam . na hi tatsiddhaṁ

mṛtamivojjīvayituṁ punaranyathā kartuṁ śakyate vaināśikaśatairapi

jñānasya jñeyatvameveti . tadapyanyena tadapyanyeneti

tvatpakṣe’tiprasaṅga iti cenna tadvibhāgopapatteḥ . sarvasya yadā hi

sarvaṁ jñeyaṁ kasyacittadā tadvyatiriktaṁ jñānaṁ jñānameveti dvitīyo

vibhāga evābhyupagamyate’vaināśikaiḥ . na tṛtīyastadviṣaya

ityanavasthānupapattiḥ jñānasya sve vāvijñeyatve sarvajñatvahāniriti

cet? so’pi doṣastasyaivāstu kintannivarhaṇenāsmākamanavasthādoṣaśca

jñānasya jñayatvābhyupagamādavaśyañcaiva vaināśikānāṁ jñānaṁ

jñeyam svātmanā cāvijñeyatvenanavasthā’nivāryā . samāna evāyaṁ doṣa

iti cenna jñānasyaikatvopapatteḥ .

sarvadeśakālapuruṣādyavasthamekameva jñānaṁ

nāmarūpādyanekopādhibhedāt

savitrādijalādiprativimbavadanekatayāvabhāsata iti . nā’sau doṣaḥ . tathā

cedihedamucyate . nanuśruterihaivāntaḥ śarīre paricchinnaḥ

kuṇḍavadaravatpuruṣa iti, na prāṇādikalākāraṇatvāt . na hi

śarīramātraparicchinnasya prāṇasya śraddhādīnāṁ kalānāṁ kāraṇatvaṁ

pratipattuṁ śaknuyāt . kalākāryatvācca śarīrasya . na hi puruṣakāryāṇāṁ

kalānāṁ kāryaṁ saccharīraṁ kāraṇakāraṇaṁ svasya puruṣaṁ

kuṇḍavadaramivābhyantaraṁ kuryāt, vījavatsyāditi cet? yathā vījakāryo

vṛkṣastatkāryañca phalaṁ svakāraṇakāraṇaṁ

vījamabhyantarīkarotyāmrādi tadvatpuruṣamabhyantarīkuryāt śarīraṁ

svakāraṇakāraṇamapīti cenna anyatvāt sāvayavatvācca . dṛṣṭānte

kāraṇavījādvṛkṣaphalasaṁvṛttānyanyānyeva vījāni dārṣṭāntike tu

svakāraṇakāraṇabhūtaḥ sa eva puruṣaḥ śarīre’bhyantarīkṛtaḥ śrūyate .

vījavṛkṣādīnāṁ sāvayavatvācca syādādhārādheyatvaṁ niravayavaśca

puruṣaḥ sāvayavāśca kalāḥ śarīrañca etenākāśasyāpi

śarīrādhāratvamanupapannaṁ kimutākāśakāraṇasya puruṣasya

tasmādasamāno dṛṣṭāntaḥ . kindṛṣṭāntena vacanāt syāditi cenna

vacanasyākārakatvāt . na hi vacanaṁ vastuno’nyathākaraṇe vyāpriyate

kintarhi yathābhūtārthāvadyotane . tasmādantaḥ śarīra ityetadvacanaṁ

aṇḍasyāntarvyometivacca draṣṭavyam . upalabdhinimittatvācca .

darśanaśravaṇamananavijñānādiliṅgairantaḥśarīre paricchinna iva

hyupalabhyate cāta ucyate–antaḥśarīre somya! sa puruṣa iti . na

punarākāśakāraṇaṁ san kuṇḍavadaravaccharīraparicchinna iti

manasāpīcchati vaktuṁ mūḍho’pi! kimuta pramāṇabhūtā śrutiḥ .

yasminnetāḥ ṣoḍaśa kalāḥ prabhavantītyuktaṁ puruṣaviśeṣaṇāthaṁ

kalānāṁ prabhavaḥ, sa cānyo’rtho’pi śrutaḥ kena krameṇa syādityata

idamucyate . cetanapūrvikā ca sṛṣṭirityevamarthe ca puruṣaḥ ṣoḍaśakalaḥ

pṛṣṭo yo bhāradvājena, sa īkṣāñcakre īkṣaṇaṁ darśanaṁ cakre

kṛtavānityarthaḥ . sṛṣṭiphalakramādiviṣayaṁ kathamityucyate kasmin

kartṛviśeṣe dehādutkrānto bhaviṣyāmyahameva vā kasminvā śarīre

pratiṣṭhite’haṁ pratiṣṭhāsyāmi pratiṣṭhitaḥ syāmityarthaḥ .

sa prāṇamasṛjata prāṇācchraddhāṁ khaṁvāyurjyotirāpaḥ

pṛthivīndriyam . mano’nnamannādvīryaṁ tapo mantrāḥ karmalokā lokeṣu

ca nāma ca upani° . nanvātmā’kartā, pradhānaṁ kartṛ, ataḥ puruṣāthe

prayojanamurarīkṛtya pradhānaṁ pravartate mahadādyākāreṇa,

tatredamanupapannaṁ puruṣasya svātantryeṇekṣāpūrvakaṁ

kartṛtvavacanaṁ satvādiguṇasāmye pradhāne pramāṇopapanne

sṛṣṭikartari sati īśvarecchānuvartiṣu paramāṇuṣu satsvātmano’pyekatvena

kartṛtve sādhanābhāvādātmana ātmanyanarthakartṛtvānupapatteśca . na

hi cetanāvān buddhipūrvakāryātmano’narthaṁ kuryāt,

tasmātpuruṣārthena prayojanenekṣāpūrvakamiva niyatakrameṇa

pravartamāne’cetane pradhāne cetanavadupacāro’yaṁ–sa īkṣāñcakre

ityādiḥ . yathā rājñaḥ sarvārthakāriṇi bhṛtye rājeti iti cet? nātmano

bhoktṛtvavatkartṛtvopapatteḥ . yathā sāṅkhyasya

cinmātrasyāpariṇāmino’pyātmano bhoktṛtvaṁ

tadvadvedavādinābhīkṣādipūrvakaṁ jagatkartṛtvamupapannaṁ

śrutiprāmāṇyāt .

tattvāntarapariṇāmādātmano’nityatvāśuddhatvānekatvanimittacinmātrasv

arūpavikriyātaḥ puruṣasyātmanyeva bhoktṛtve cinmātrasvarūpavikriyā na

doṣāya . bhavatāṁ ṣunarvedavādināṁ sṛṣṭikartṛtve tattvāntarapariṇāma

evetyātmano’nityatvādisarvadoṣaprasaṅga iti cenna,

ekasyāpyātmano’vidyāviṣayanāmarūpopādhyanupādhikṛtaviśeṣābhyupaga

mādavidyākṛtanāmarūpopādhikṛto hi viśeṣo’bhyupagamyate

ātmanobandhamokṣādiśāstrakṛtasaṁvyavahārādyuparamārthaṁ

paramārthatī’nupādhikṛtañca tattvamekamevādvitīyamupādeyaṁ

sarvatārkikabuddhyanavagāhyamabhaya śivamiṣyate na tatra kartṛtvaṁ

bhoktṛtvaṁ vā kriyākārakaphalañca syādadvaitatvātsarvabhāvānām .

sāṅkhyāstvavidyādhyāropitameva puruṣe kartṛtvaṁ kriyākārakaṁ

phalañceti kalpayitvā”gamabāhyatvātpunastatastrasyantaḥ paramārthata

eva bhoktṛtvaṁ puruṣasyecchanti tattvāntarañca pradhānaṁ puruṣāt

paramārthavastubhūtameva kalpayanto’nyatārkikanirākṛtabaddhiviṣayāḥ

santo vihanyante . tathetare tārkikāḥ sāṅkhyairityevaṁ

parasparaviruddhārthakalpanāt āmiṣāthina iva prāṇino’nyonyaṁ

virudhyamānā arthadarśitvāt

paramārthatattvāddūramevāpakṛṣyante’tastanmatamanādṛtya

vedāntārthatattvamekatvadarśanaṁ pratyādaravanto mumukṣavaḥ syuriti

tārkikamate doṣadarśanaṁ kiñciducyate ‘smābhiḥ na tu tārkikatātparyeṇa

tathaitat atroktam . vivadan khe’vanikṣipya virodhodbhavakāraṇam . taiḥ

saṁrakṣitasadbuddhiḥ sukhaṁ nirvāti vedadit . kiñca–

bhoktṛtvakartṛtvayorvikriyayorviśeṣānupapattiḥ . kā nāmāsau

kartṛtvājjātyantarabhūtā bhoktṛtvaviśiṣṭā vikriyā yato bhoktaiva puruṣaḥ

kalpyate na kartā . pradhānantu kartreva na bhoktriti nanūktaṁ

puruṣaścinmātra eva svātmastho vikriyate

bhuñjāno’nantāntarapariṇāmena . pradhānantu tattvāntarapariṇāmena

vikriyate’to’nekamaśuddhamacetanañcetyādidharmavattadviparītaḥ

puruṣaḥ . nā’sau viśeṣo vāḍmātratvātprāgbhogotpatteḥ .

kevalacinmātrasya puruṣasya bhoktṛtvaṁ nāma viśeṣo bhogotpattikāle

cejjāyate nivṛtte ca bhoge puniṣastadvādaśebhetaścinmātra eva bhavatīti

cenmahadādyākāreṇa ca pariṇamya pradhānaṁ tato’petya punaḥ

pradhānaṁ kharūpeṇāvatiṣṭhata iti asyāṁ kalpanāyāṁ na kaścidviśeṣa iti

vāṅmātreṇa pradhānapuruṣayorviśiṣṭavikriyā kalpyate . atha bhogakāle’pi

cinmātra eva prāgvatpuruṣa iti cet? na tarhi paramārthato bhogaḥ

puruṣasya . bhogakāle cinmātrasya vikriyā paramārthaiva, tena bhogaḥ

puruṣasyeti cenna pradhānasyāpi

bhogakāle’vikriyatvādbhoktṛtvaprasaṅgaḥ . cinmātrasyaiva

vikriyābhoktṛtvamiti

cedauṣṇyādasādhāraṇadharmavatāmagnyādonāmabhoktṛtve

hetvanupapattiḥ . pradhānapuruṣayoryugapadbhoktṛtvamiti cenna

pradhānasya pārārthyānupapatteḥ . na hi

bhoktrordvayoritaretaraguṇapradhānabhāva upapadyate

prakāśayorivetaretaraprakāśane . bhogadharmavati satvāṅgini cetasi

puruṣasya caitanyaprativimbādayo’vikriyasya puruṣasya bhoktṛtvamiti

cenna puruṣasya kasyāpanayanārthaṁ mokṣasā dhanaṁ śāstraṁ

praṇīyate’vidyādhyāropitānarthāpanayanāya śāstrapraṇayanamiti cet?

paramārthataḥ puruṣo bhoktaiva na kartā pradhānaṁ kartreva na bhoktṛ

paramarthasadvastvantaraṁ puruṣāccetīyaṁ kalpanā”gamabāhyā

vyarthā nirhetukā ca iti nādartavyā mumukṣubhiḥ . ekatve’pi

śāstrapraṇayanādyānarthakyamiti cenna abhāvāt . na hi

śāstrapraṇetrādiṣu tatphalārthiṣu ca śāstrasya praṇayanamanarthakaṁ

sārthakañceti kalpanā syāt . na hyātmaikatve

śāstrapraṇetrādayastato’bhinnāḥ santi tadabhāve

evaṁvikalpanaivānupapannāḥ . abhyupagate ātmaikatve

pramāṇārthaścābhyupagato bhavatā yadātmaikatvamabhyupagacchatā .

tadabhyupagame ca kalpanānupapattimāha śāstram . yatra tvasya

sarvamātmaivābhūttatkena kaṁ paśyet?

ityādiśāstrapraṇayanādyupapattiñcāha . anyatra

paramārthavastusvarūpādavidyāviṣaye yatra hi dvaitamiva bhavatītyādi .

vistarato vājasaneyake . vibhakte vidyā’vidye parāpare ityādāveva

śāstrasyāto na tārkikavādabhaṭapraveśaḥ vedāntarājapramāṇabāhugupte

ihārtmakatvaviṣaya iti .

etenāvidyākṛtanāmarūpādyupādhikṛtānekaśaktisādhanakṛtabhedavattvādb

rahmaṇaḥ sṛṣṭyādikartṛtve sādhanādyabhāvo doṣaḥ pratyukto veditavyaḥ

parairukta ātmānarthakartṛtvādidoṣaśca . yastu dṛṣṭānto rājñaḥ

sarvārthakāriṇi kartṛtvādyupacārādrājā karteti so’trānupapannaḥ . sa

īkṣāñcakra iti śrutermukhyārthabādhanātpramāṇabhūtāyāḥ tatra hi gauṇī

kalpanā . śabdasya, yatra mukhyārtho na sambhavati . iha tvacetanasya

muktabaddhapuruṣaviśeṣāpekṣayā kartṛkarmadeśakālanimittāpekṣayā ca

bandhamokṣādiphalārthā niyatā puruṣaṁ prati pravṛttirnopapadyate .

yathoktasarvajñeśvarakartṛtvapakṣe tūpapannā, īśvareṇaiva sarvādhikārī

prāṇaḥ puruṣeṇa sṛjyate . kathaṁ? sa puruṣa uktaprakāreṇekṣitvā

prāṇaṁ 1 hiraṇyagarbhākhyaṁ

sarvaprāṇikaraṇādhāramantarātmānamasṛjata sṛṣṭavān, atraḥ prāṇāt

śraddhāṁ 2 sarvaprāṇināṁ śubhakarmapravṛttihetubhūtām . tataḥ

karmaphalopabhogasādhanādhiṣṭhānāni kāraṇabhūtāni

mahābhūtānyasṛjata . khaṁ 3 śabdaguṇaṁ vāyuṁ 4 svena sparśena

kāraṇaguṇena ca viśiṣṭaṁ dviguṇam . tathā jyotiḥ 5 svena rūpeṇa

pūrvābhyāñca śabdasparśābhyām viśiṣṭaṁ triguṇaṁ tathā”po 6 rasena

guṇenāsādhāraṇena pūrvaguṇānupraveśena caturguṇāḥ . tathā gandhena

pūrbaguṇānupraveśena pañcaguṇā pṛthivī 7 . tathā taireva

bhūtairārabdhamindriyaṁ 8 dviprakāraṁ buddhyarthaṁ karmārthañca

daśasaṅkhyam . tasya ceśvaramantaḥsthaṁ saṁśayasaṅkalpādilakṣaṇaṁ

manaḥ 9 . evaṁ prāṇināṁ kāryaṁ karaṇañca sṛṣṭvā tatsthityarthaṁ

vrīhiyavādilakṣaṇamannam 10 . tataścānnādadyamānādvīryaṁ 11

sāmarthyaṁ balaṁ sarvakarmapravṛttisādhanam . tadvīryavatāñca

prāṇināṁ tapaḥ 12 viśuddhisādhanaṁ saṅkīryamāṇānāṁ, mantrā 13

stapoviśuddhāntarvahiḥkaraṇebhyaḥ karmasādhanametā

ṛgyajuḥsāmātharvāṅgirasaḥ . tataḥ karma 14 agnihotrādilakṣaṇam . tato

lokāḥ 15 karmaṇāṁ phalam . teṣu ca sṛṣṭānāṁ prāṇināṁ nāma 16 ca

devadatto yajñadattaityādi . evametāḥ kalāḥ

prāṇināmavidyādidoṣavījāpekṣayā sṛṣṭāstaimirikadṛṣṭisṛṣṭā iva

dvicandramaśakamakṣikādyāḥ svapnadṛksṛṣṭā iva ca sarve padārthāḥ

punastasminneva puruṣe pralīyante hitvā nāmarūpādivibhāgam bhā° . sa

yathemā nadyaḥ syandamānāḥ samudrāyaṇāḥ samudraṁ prāpyāstaṁ

gacchanti, bhidyete tāsāṁ nāmarūpe samudra ityevaṁ procyate .

evamevāsya paridraṣṭurimāḥ ṣoḍaśa kalāḥ puruṣāyaṇāḥ puruṣaṁ

prāpyāstaṁ gacchanti, bhidyete tāsāṁ nāmarūpe puruṣa ityevaṁ

procyate, sa eṣo’kalo’mṛto bhavati, tadeṣa ślokaḥ

kathaṁ sa dṛṣṭāntaḥ? yathā loke imā nadyaḥ syandamānāḥ

sravantyaḥ samudrāyaṇāḥ samudro’yanaṁ gatirātmabhāvo yāsāṁ tāḥ

samudrāyaṇāḥ samudraṁ prāpyopagamyāstaṁ nāmarūpatiraskāraṁ

gacchanti . tāsāñcāstaṁ gatānāṁ bhidyete vinaśyete nāmarūpe

gaṅgāyamunetyādilakṣaṇe . tadbhede samudra ityevaṁ procyate

tadvastūdakalakṣaṇameva, yathā’yaṁ dṛṣṭāntaḥ . uktalakṣaṇasya

prakṛtasya puruṣasyaparidraṣṭuḥ pari samantāddraṣṭurdarśanasya kartuḥ

svarūpabhūtasya . yathārkaḥ svātmaprakāśasya kartā tadvad, imā ṣoḍaśa

kalāḥ prāṇādyāḥ uktāḥ kalāḥ puruṣāyaṇā nadīnāmiva samudraḥ

puruṣo’yanamātmabhāvagamanaṁ yāsāṁ kalānāṁ tāḥ puruṣāyaṇāḥ

puruṣaṁ prāpya puruṣātmabhāvamupagamya tathaivāstaṁ gacchanti .

bhidyete tāsāṁ nāmarūpe kalānāṁ prāṇādyākhyā rūpañca .

yathāsvabhede ca nāmarūpayoryadanaṣṭaṁ tattvaṁ puruṣa ityeva

procyate brahmavidbhiḥ . ya evaṁ vidvān guruṇā

pradarśitakalapralayamārgaḥ sa eṣa vidyayā

pravilāpitāsvavidyākāmakarmajanitāsu

prāṇādikalāsvakalo’vidyākṛtakalānimitto hi

mṛtyustadapagame’kalatvādevāmṛto bhavati . tadetasminnarthe eṣa

ślokaḥ bhā° . arā iva rathanābhau kalā yasmin pratiṣṭhitāḥ . taṁ vedyaṁ

puruṣaṁ veda yathā bhā vo mṛtyuḥ parivyatha upa° . arā

rathacakraparikarā iva rathanābhau rathacakrasya nābhau yathā

praveśitāstadāśrayā bhavanti yathā tathetyarthaḥ . kalāḥ prāṇādyā

yasmin puruṣe pratiṣṭhitā utpattisthitilayakāleṣu taṁ puruṣaṁ

kalānāmātmabhūtaṁ vedyaṁ vedanīyaṁ pūrṇatvāt puruṣaṁ puri

śayanādvā veda jānīyāt . yathā he śiṣyā vo yuṣmānmṛtyurmā parivyathā

mā parivyathayatu . vyathāmāpannā duḥkhina eva yūyaṁ stha atastanmā

bhūd yuṣmākamityabhiprāyaḥ bhā° .

tathā ca prāṇaḥ 1 śraddhā 2 vyoma 3 vāyuḥ 4 tejaḥ 5 jalaṁ 6 pṛthivī 7

indriyaṁ 8 manaḥ 9 annam 10 vīryam 11 tapaḥ 12 mantrāḥ 13 karma 14

lokaḥ 15 . nāma 16 ityetā prāṇādināmāntāḥ ṣoḍaśa kalāḥ puruṣasya

upādhaya iti sthitam . gatāḥ kalāḥ pañcadaśa pratiṣṭhām śrutiḥ 3

aṁśamātre ca prācī dik kalā dakṣiṇā dik kalodīcīdikkalaiṣa saumya!

catuṣkalaḥ pādo brahmaṇaḥ prakāśavānnāma sa ya etamevaṁ

vidvāṁścatuṣakalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇaḥ prakāśavānityupāste

prakāśavānasmiṁlloke bhavati prakāśavato ha lokāñjayati ya eta

mevaṁvidvāṁścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇaḥ prakāśavānityupāste

pṛthivī kalā’ntarikṣaṁ kalā dyauḥ kalā samudraḥ kalaiṣa vai saumya!

catuṣkalaḥ pādobrahmaṇo’nantavānnāma . sa ya

etamevaṁvidvāṁścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ

brahmaṇo’nantavānityupāste’nantavānasmiṁlloke bhavatyanantavato ha

lokāñjayati ya etamevaṁvidvāṁścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ

brahmaṇo’nantavānityupāste . agniḥ kalā sūryaḥ kalā candraḥ kalā

vidyutkalaiṣa vai saumya! catuṣkalaḥ pādo brahmaṇo jyotiṣmānnāma sa

ya etamevaṁvidvāṁścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇojyotiṣmānityupāste

jyotiṣmānasmilloṁke bhavati jyotiṣmato ha lokāñjayati ya

etamevaṁvidvāṁścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇo jyotiṣmānityupāste .

prāṇaḥ kalā cakṣuḥ kalā śrotraṁ kalā manaḥ kalaiṣa vai saumya!

catuṣkalaḥ pādobrahmaṇa āyatanavānnāma sa ya etameva vidvāṁ

ścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇa āyatanavānityupāste

āyatanavānasmilloṁke bhavatyāyatanavato lokāñjayati ya

etamevaṁvidvāṁścatuṣkalaṁ pādaṁ brahmaṇa āyatanavānityupāste .

avatāraśabde bhūri udāharaṇam dṛśyam . paladvayātmake 4

kālāṁśabhede sa ca si° śi° darśitoyathāyo’kṣṇornimeṣasya kharāma 30

bhāgaḥ sa tatparastacchatabhāga uktā . truṭirnimeṣairdhṛtibhi 18 śca

kāṣṭhā tattriṁśatā sadgaṇakaiḥ kaloktā . triṁ śatkalā”rkṣī ghaṭikā kṣaṇaḥ

syānnāḍīdvayaṁ taiḥ khaguṇai 30 rdinaṁ ca . gurvakṣaraiḥ khendumitai

10 rasustaiḥ ṣaḍibhaḥ palaṁ tairghaṭikā khaṣaḍbhiḥ 60 . syādvā

ghaṭīṣaṣṭirahakharāmai 30 rmāso dinaistairdvikubhi 12 śca varṣam .

kṣetre samādyena samā vibhāgāḥ syuścakrarāśyaṁśakalāviliptāḥ śi° .

yo’kṣṇorlocanayoḥ pakṣmapātaḥ sa nimeṣaḥ . sa yāvatā kālena

niṣpadyate tāvān kālo’pi nimeṣaśabdenocyate upacārāt . tasya

triṁśadvibhāgastatparasaṁjñaḥ tatparasya śatāṁśastruṭiriti . atha ca

nimeṣairaṣṭādaśabhiḥ kāṣṭhā . kvacicchāstrāntare tithibhiriti pāṭhaḥ .

kāṣṭhātriṁśatā kaloktā . kalānāṁ triṁśatā ghaṭikā . sācākṣīṁ

bhabhramasya ṣaṣṭibhāga ityarthaḥ . ghaṭikādvayena kṣaṇo muhūrtaḥ .

kṣaṇānāṁ triṁśatā dinam . atha prakārāntareṇa dinamucyate .

gurvakṣaraiḥ khendumitaiḥ 10 asuriti . ekamātrolaghuḥ dvimātro guruḥ .

tathā sānusvārī visargānto dīrghoyuktaparastu yaḥ iti chandolakṣaṇe

pratipāditam yadakṣaraṁ sānusvāraṁ visargāntaṁ dīrghaṁ

yasyākṣarasya parataḥ saṁyogastallaghvapi gurusaṁjñaṁ jñeyam .

gurvakṣarasyoccāryamāṇasya yāvān kālastaddaśakenaiko’suḥ prāṇaḥ .

praśastendriyapuruṣasya śvāsocchvāsāntarvartī kālaityarthaḥ . ṣaḍbhiḥ

prāṇairekaṁ pānīyapalam . palānāṁ ṣaṣṭyā dhaṭī . ghaṭīnāṁ ṣaṣṭyā

dinam . triṁśaddinairekomāsaḥ . māsairdvādaśabhirvarṣamiti kālasya

vibhāgo darśitaḥ prami° . ahno’stamayavelāyāṁ kalāmātrā’pi yā tithiḥ

kālamā° vyāsaḥ . pratipalleśamātreṇa kalāmātreṇa cāṣṭamī paṭhanti . sa

ca trīṇi trīṇi kalāsahasrāṇi pañcadaśa ca kalā ekaikasmin

dhātāvavatiṣṭhate iti suśru° . aṣṭādaśa sahasrāṇi saṁkhyā cāsmin

samuccaye . kalānāṁ navatiḥ proktā suśru° . vikalānāṁ kalā ṣaṣṭyā

tatṣaṣṭyā bhāga ucyate . tattriṁśatā bhavedrāśirbhagaṇodvādaśaiva te

sū° si° . ukte rāśicakrasya 216000 mite bhāge ca kṣetre samādyena samā

vibhāgā ityādi śi° kṣetre kakṣāyāṁ samādyena varṣādyena samāstulyāḥ

kṣetravibhāgā jñeyāḥ . te ke . cakrarāśyaṁśakalāviliptāḥ . yathaikasya

varṣasva māsadinādayo vibhāgā evaṁ bhagaṇasya rāśyaṁśādayaḥ

prami° . si° śi° ukte dinamānajñānopayogini dinajyāguṇite

vyāsārdhabhakte sūtrātmake 6 padārthe ca yathā– uktā

prabhābhimatadiṅniyamena tāvat tāmeva kālaniyamena ca vacim bhūyaḥ

. syādunnataṁ dyugataśeṣakayoryaṁdalpaṁ tenonitaṁ dinadalaṁ

natasaṁjñakaṁ ca . athonnatādūnayutāccareṇa

kramādudagdahiṇagolayorjyā . syāt sūtrametadguṇitaṁ dyumaurvyā

vyāsārdhabhaktaṁ ca kalābhidhānam śi° divasasya yadgataṁ yacca

śeṣaṁ tayoryadalpaṁ tadunnatasaṁjñaṁ jñeyaṁ tenonnatenonīkṛtaṁ

dinadalapramāṇaṁ tannatasaṁjñaṁ bhavati .

athonnatādunnatakālāduttaragole careṇonitātdakṣiṇe yutādyā jyā tat

sūtram sā sūtrasaṁjñetyarthaḥ . tat sūtraṁ dyujyayā guṇitaṁ trijyayā

bhaktaṁ kalāsajñaṁ bhavati . atropapattiḥ . yasmin kāle chāyā sādhyā

tasmin kāle svāhorātravṛtte yāvatībhirghaṭikābhiḥ kṣitijādunnato

ravistāsāmunnatasaṁjñā . yena kālena madhyāhnānnatastasya natasaṁ

jñā . atha careṇa madhyāhnānnatayutasyonnatakālasya kila jyā sādhyā sā

ca jyāmadhyāvadhirbhavati . sa ca

madhyapradeśo’horātravṛttasyonmaṇḍalasaṁpāte bhavati . yata

unmaṇḍalasaṁpātābhyāmūrdhvamahorātravṛttasyārdhamadho’rdham .

ataścarārdhena varjitādunnatāduttaragole, dakṣiṇe tu yutāt . yata

uttaragole kṣitijāduparyunmaṇḍalam dakṣiṇe’dhaḥ . tasmāt kālād yā jyā

sādhitā sā trijyāvṛttapariṇatā . sā ca sūtrasaṁjñā . atha yadi trijyāvṛtte

etāvatī, tadā dyujyāvṛtte kiyatītyanupātena dyujyāvṛttapariṇatā . sā ca

kalāsaṁjñā . idānīṁ prakārāntareṇa kalā tasyāśceṣṭayaṣṭimāha prami° .

sūtraṁ kujīvāguṇitaṁ vibhaktaṁ carajyayā syādathavā kalā sā . kalā

palakṣetrajakoṭinighnī tatkarṇabhaktā bhavatīṁṣṭayaṣṭiḥ śi° . athavā tat

sūtraṁ kujyayā guṇitaṁ carajyayā maktaṁ sat kalā mavati . sā

kalāṣṭadhā palakṣetrakoṭibhirguṇyā svasvakarṇena bhājyā

phalamaṣṭadheṣṭayaṣṭirbhavati . atropapattiḥ . atra carajyākujye

trijyādyujyāpariṇate . atastābhyāṁ cānupātaḥ . yadi carajyayā kujyā
